Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk has put pen to paper on a whopping new six-year deal with the club on a contract that will take him up to the summer of 2022, the club can confirm.
The news comes as a massive shock to everyone involved as the Dutchman only signed on deadline day last summer but after such an incredible debut season in the Premier League, the news is a massive boost to all concerned.
Signed for a fee of £13 million, van Dijk has been arguably Saints’ best player this season. His composure on the ball and defensive capabilities have caught the eye of many and he is quickly becoming a fans’ favourite at the club.
Van Dijk has experience of European football with previous club Celtic, as well as international experience since his arrival; two qualities that will be hugely necessary as Saints look to build on their strong season so far.
