Southampton searching Portugal for potential signings

Southampton have reportedly assigned their scouts yet another European mission as they look ahead to the upcoming season, starting with a view of some of the Primeira Liga’s finest talents.

There is no chance of any more new faces at Southampton this month, however, as Ronald Koeman confirmed that the only signing that his side would be making came in the form of £4 million striker Charlie Austin.

However, there is no doubt that when the summer comes around, players will be on Koeman’s radar and quite possibly, some already are.

Saints reportedly sent officials to overlook Portuguese giants Porto’s game against Guimaraes as the minnows pulled off an unlikely 1-0 victory. However, it was not the result that the scouts were interested in, but more so in the form of potential targets.

One player that Southampton have been rumoured to have scouted in recent times comes in the form of powerful centre-back Bruno Martins Indi. The Netherlands international defender has a good relationship with manager Koeman after the pair spent a considerable amount of time together at the club and it would come as no surprise to see the Dutch tactician make another move for his former Feyenoord prodigy.

Although Saints captain Jose Fonte is still playing at a high level for the club and displaying his importance week-in, week out, the Portugal international turned 32 last month and Martins Indi could be the perfect long-term replacement.
