According to reports, Southampton were in advanced talks to sign promising Marseille winger Lucas Ocampos just last week before being dealt the crushing news that broke the deal down; an injury to the player.
The Argentinian winger was reportedly in line to join the Saints in the coming days after secret talks were held between the clubs, however Ocampos sustained an injury in Marseille’s 0-0 draw to Guingamp on Sunday afternoon, ruling him out for up to two months.
It comes as a huge surprise that negotiations with Southampton went so far under the radar, as the 21-year-old wide man was all set for a move to the Serie A, in the form of Fiorentina.
However, any move in prospect that the former Monaco man could have been a part of has been cancelled now as the Argentinian youngster looks to continue his recovery from injury.
Although Saints boss Ronald Koeman spoke of his desire to bring in just the one player in January, with a striker in mind, a move for Ocampos could have been an intelligent one from Saints as their striking options begin to return from respective injuries.
