Southampton not signing Vilhena this month

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman has confirmed that the Saints will not be signing Feyenoord midfielder Tony Vilhena this month.

The 21-year-old Dutch central midfielder has been touted with a move to Southampton for a while now and Koeman did confirm his interest in Vilhena last year.

Vilhena has almost amassed 100 league appearances for Feyenoord in Holland and is thought to be one of the most promising young Dutch players around. Koeman worked with him before at Feyenoord so it is no surprise to see the links.

However, Koeman has now came out and said that Vilhena is not a transfer target of his for this window and that he is only looking to bring in one player over the course of this month.

That player is likely to be a striker as Koeman has said that he would like to add depth to that area of the pitch. This was following injuries to Graziano Pelle and Jay Rodriguez.

There is perhaps one player to strengthen our squad, but it will not be Vilhena.

A young player just gets better from strong competition, but he must occasionally play. The selection of today and the selection in my time at Feyenoord is not comparable. Feyenoord have many midfielders contracted and Vilhena must now fight for his chance.

I do believe that a young player can only get better when he plays. He is still young and I think he can learn a lot at Feyenoord.
