Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand told the Daily Echo that their win yesterday was flawless.
Bertrand also hailed Fraser Forster on his return from injury and how the English international instilled new confidence among the defence.
I was very happy for him (Forster) to come back tonight and get a clean-sheet, so it’s a fantastic return for him and a massive boost for us.
It’s good, he fills you with confidence. It’s good to have him back.
Speaking after the match, Bertrand said this:
I think sometimes, luck hasn’t been on our side. We’ve been getting punished for a few mistakes here and there and you know the other team have capitalised on that.
Tonight was a flawless game from us and a well deserved result.
It’s good to get that win under our belts. It was much needed against a difficult opposition.
I think the boys done very well tonight, but we’re not getting carried away yet, there’s still plenty of football to play this season and hopefully we can keep that consistency.
The Saints beat Watford 2-0 at St.Mary’s to pick up just their second win in 11 games in all competitions. Shane Long scored the first goal when he headed home Matt Targett’s cross.
Dusan Tadic then made it two when he kept cool in the box to slot under Gomes’ and seal the win for the home side. The win lifted Southampton to 12th in the Premier League.
Although Bertrand claimed it was a flawless performance, Southampton’s finishing left a bit to be desired. Sadio Mane had two clear cut chances to score but failed to take either of them and Gomes was forced into a number of saves.
