Koeman has no intentions of replacing Caulker

Southampton boss Ronald Koeman has insisted that he is not looking to fill the void left by the departed Steven Caulker after the former Saints loanee secured yet another short-term spell away from QPR, tieing up a move to Liverpool.

It was announced today that the 24-year-old England international defender was to cancel his loan deal at St Mary’s in order to sign a new temporary deal with Liverpool, who have recently been plagued with injuries in the defensive area.

Caulker made just eight appearances for Saints, with just one start in the league coming against Watford in late August, but has failed to impress boss Ronald Koeman.

He didn’t play a lot and I’m not the type of coach to complain and to stop his opportunity to play for Liverpool. Am I disappointed Steven didn’t make more of an impact during his six months? No, he had some injuries.

The powerful defender will be best known for his calamitous game against his new side Liverpool when Southampton took a 6-1 drubbing from the Reds in the Capital One Cup quarter final, with Caulker being easily beaten and punished on several occasions.

We won’t replace him because everybody is looking for centre backs and we need players at the moment who make the team better, and not just to have numbers. We use young ones for numbers.

However, with the upcoming return of Florin Gardos after a long-term knee injury that the Romanian international sustained in pre-season, Caulker is not really needed.
