Stekelenburg aims to cut out mistakes

Southampton goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg has told Southampton’s website that the mistakes that are being made need to be cut out in order to end the club’s poor run of form.

The Saints are currently six games without a win in all competitions coming into tonight’s match with Arsenal at St.Mary’s. Five of those six matches have resulted in losses for Ronald Koeman’s, including a 6-1 defeat to Liverpool in the Capital One Cup; a game that Stekelenburg came under a lot of criticism for following his display against Jurgen Klopp’s reds.

Stekelenburg has missed the last two matches with a toe injury and Paulo Gazzaniga deputised between the sticks against Crystal Palace away and Tottenham at home, which resulted in 2-0 and 1-0 losses.

A lot of the goals that Southampton are conceding have been put down to individual mistakes/error and in order to return to form; Southampton need to start cutting them out.

Speaking about what Southampton need to change in their game, Stekelenburg said this:

Obviously the mistakes from the goals that we conceded and be more clinical on the front because we’ve been getting the chances.

Against Crystal Palace even two minutes before full time we had a chance and if that goes in then you get a point and an away point is always good.

It’s tough. The last couple of games we didn’t get results, but there were phases in the games where we played well and had opportunities to open the score but we don’t and then we make a mistake and they score.
