On a hugely frustrating day for Southampton, there was a lot left to be desired from their lacklustre performance against Aston Villa, which resulted in a simply below par 1-1 draw at St. Mary’s.
There was little to shout about regarding Ronald Koeman’s men, with a mix of poor performances and a clear lack of urgency and desire to attack and take the game by the scruff of the neck.
However, if there was a person in the Southampton side that turned in a half-respectable performance, it was the ever reliable Virgil van Dijk.
The towering Dutchman was faced with a big physical task of coping with the mountain that is Aston Villa striker Rudy Gestede, however he was no match for van Dijk on the day. His composure, awareness and decision making was a key part of Southampton’s performance on what was a game that they really should have put to bed early on.
