With Southampton facing Manchester City this weekend, I spoke to ReadManCity writer Josh Lawless on City’s start to the season and other topics surrounding the clash.
How would you asses your start to the season?
It’s been a weird one, but I think that’s the case for the league on the whole ( I mean Leicester are top at the moment). We started off wonderfully, looking rejuvenated and winning five games on the bounce without conceding a single goal. But since then, with horrid luck with injuries we’ve gone off the ball and haven’t won in three games. I would never have expected a home game against Southampton to be so important.
I’m not so sure we are anymore purely because of the injuries we are getting to key players. We were quite rightly labelled favourites after that five game bounce but things have changed since then and the league has been more competitive. We are definitely still up there but I think Arsenal or United can be considered as likely to win the league as we are.
David Silva may not start the game but his return is massive for us and inevitably he is someone who could destroy Southampton if he’s on the ball. He may also bring the best out of De Bruyne, who has struggled in the last few weeks.

Pelle not playing is huge for us considering how poor we are at the back without Kompany in the side. But I also think that willing runners like Long and Mane could cause us a lot of problems so I am definitely worried about coming up against those two.
A raw, direct and explosive player like Mane would be someone who could play a part in the City side but I still think I’d have Sterling ahead of him despite his difficulties. I think Pelle could be a decent back-up striker for Aguero but someone I would definitely take is James Ward-Prowse. I think he’s an incredible prospect and someone who is destined to play at a higher level. We need to inject some youth into our midfield so he would be perfect.
Score prediction?
It will be a close one but I think City will just edge it. 2-1.
I would like to thank Josh for taking the time to answer my questions and wish them the best of luck for the rest of the season, after tomorrow, of course.
