Southampon midfielder James Ward-Prowse has revealed that he has strong intentions to become The Saints’ captain in the near future.
Ward-Prowse, already the captain of the England Under-21’s side, scored for Gareth Southgate’s men just last night as they went on to secure a 3-1 victory over Switzerland.
The young midfielder has been tipped for big things in the future and with already over 100 appearances to his name for his lifelong club in Southampton, Ward-Prowse is eyeing another momentous achievement in his short career so far.
I want to try and nail down a permanent spot in the Southampton team, so to come away here and add to my experience and play is great. Becoming captain of Southampton is a target for me in the long term so to get this sort of experience now is going to stand me in good stead for that.
If Ward-Prowse can continue to feature regularly for Ronald Koeman’s Southampton side, there is no reason why the Englishman can not get himself a call-up to the England national side given recent chances that have been awarded to fellow young English midfielders in the Premier League such as Jesse Lingard and Dele Alli.
However, it seems as though Ward-Prowse has his sights firmly set on one day leading Southampton out wearing the captain’s armband.
