Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk has been named by the Southampton supporters as their October Player of the Month after a series of glittering displays in his second month at the club.
Van Dijk, signed for £13 million from Scottish champions Celtic on deadline day last summer won the vote by earning up to 60% of the votes from The Saints fans, beating September winner Graziano Pelle, August winner Sadio Mane and fellow defender Cedric Soares to the title for the month.

Despite there being just three games in the month of October for van Dijk’s Southampton side, the towering Dutchman showed his star quality in all three appearances with commanding and composed displays, including two excellent games against top attacks in the form of Liverpool and Chelsea, as well as a good performance against high-flying Leicester, whom he scored against.
Speaking about his award, van Dijk told the Southampton FC YouTube channel:
It’s all happening because of my teammates, and the staff of course. I’m enjoying every day and I’m very happy.
However, it wasn’t just the people around him who van Dijk had to thank, and speaking of the fans influence on his performances and the team, the Dutchman said:
The fans have been great. I’m just happy to be here. I’m enjoying every week and every game.
Can van Dijk enjoy another excellent month for The Saints to earn his second consecutive “Player of the Month” award?
