Jose Fonte has called for his Southampton team-mates to become more ruthless in taking chances and killing off games after his side beat Bournemouth 2-0 at the weekend.
Fonte, 31, was unimpressed by the manner in which his team carried out the second half of the game on Sunday after he was substituted at the break due to a minor hamstring injury.
It seemed as though in the first half, Southampton had the composure and the cutting edge to really punish Bournemouth, as they went in leading 2-0 at the break, however The Saints appeared to take their foot of the gas in the second half and invited the pressure that The Cherries posed to them, allowing them to play football.
We need to do better in this kind of situations, because it’s not the first now, because again against Leicester as well we lacked a little bit of intensity in the second-half.
The Southampton captain is led to believe that the issue with seeing out games for his team is the mentality of how they are approaching matches and how they are struggling to see them out with the correct amount of intensity and composure.
That is why everyone in the dressing room was disappointed after you win 2-0 at home, because if you want to compete with the top six then you cannot allow yourself to have this second half. That is why I say it is a mentality issue.
Jose Fonte has confirmed that his substitution against Bournemouth was only precautionary and he is expected to be fit for Southampton’s away match against Sunderland on Saturday.
