Southampton 2-1 Aston Villa: Five things we learned

Southampton progressed through to the quarter-finals of the Capital One Cup last night with a 2-1 win over a manger-less Aston Villa side.

Maya Yoshida opened the scoring with a low left-footed drive from outside the box before Graziano Pelle superbly volley home Southampton’s second.

Maya Yoshida picked the ball up 25-yards out before moving a few yards forward and drilling a low shot past Brad Guzan in off the post. Pelle’s goal was equally as brilliant as Dusan Tadic set him up with a delicious chip over the defender and the Italian fired the ball into the corner on the volley.

Aston Villa pulled a goal back late on after Virgil Van Dijk conceded a penalty. Substitute Scott Sinclair stepped up and buried the spot-kick to reduce the deficit. However, it was in the 94th minute so it was too little too late for Aston Villa to force the game to extra time.

Here are five things that I think were learnt from yesterday’s game.
