Southampton travel away to face Liverpool today and I caught up with ReadLiverpool’s main man Ben Smith to ask him a few questions in the build-up to today’s clash at Anfield.
How would you rate Liverpool’s start to the season?
After a promising first few games it looked as though we’d turned a corner after a dismal end to last term. As it turned out, that was a false dawn, and in the end the owners had no choice but to change the manager. And they couldn’t have picked a better one!
Has Klopp got what it takes to succeed as Liverpool boss?
An emphatic yes. He took over Dortmund under relatively similar circumstances and led them on to do things that nobody could have expected. We don’t have an exceptional squad, but there’s plenty for him to work with – some talented youngsters that just need to be pushed in the right direction. Having a manager of his calibre will help the club attract top tier talent, too.
Who should Saints most look out for?
It looks like Daniel Sturridge will be back for Sunday, so he’s the obvious threat. He’s by far our best, and most consistent, player. Philippe Coutinho could also do some damage, but he’s been hot and cold this term.
Who are you fearing most in the Saints side?
Sadio Mane has started the campaign really impressively. He’s got the quality with his end product to complement his pace, and I think the top clubs (no disrespect) will be sniffing around him in January. Graziano Pelle is also a class act, so we’ll do well to keep him quiet.
What is your score prediction?
Think the Reds will win 2-1. Sturridge to get both for Liverpool, and Jose Fonte to score from a set piece for Southampton.
