Southampton take on Swansea this weekend and I had the chance to fire some questions at ReadSwansea’s Declan Terry.
How would you describe Swansea’s start to the season?
“Steady. If you asked this question before the international break, I would have said it was a brilliant start to the season. However, a very disappointing loss to Watford, and another against Hull in the Capital One cup has put a big dampener on things. Now, we’ll be desperate to avoid another loss against Southampton on Saturday.”
What do you think of Southampton as a club?
“I like Southampton very much, and always enjoy watching them play as they’re a great attacking team. In a way, I find a lot of similarities between Southampton and Swansea; both made their way up the leagues very quickly, both aren’t mega-rich, but still manage great business, and both have excelled in the Premier League since getting promoted. So yes, a great club.”
Who will cause Southampton the most trouble?
“After recent performances, no-one actually springs to mind, but I think the duo of Bafetimbi Gomis and André Ayew can cause any team troubles on their day. They link up terrifically, and have had sensational starts to the campaign. Other than that, Jonjo Shelvey will look to worry the Saints, and make a repeat of last season’s late winner at St. Mary’s.”
Who are you most worried about facing?
“Sadio Mane and Dusan Tadic have the abilities to punish us in attack, and if you add Graziano Pelle into the equation it’s one scary unit. However, if I’m not mistaken, Pelle is struggling with fitness so that’s one less player to worry about, but of course there’s Jay Rodriguez and Shane Long that can also put in a good shift in.”
Who do you think did a better job last season, Garry Monk or Ronald Koeman?
“Very tough question that. I think they accomplished in different ways last season, with Koeman having to replace and restructure a team that was ripped apart by Liverpool’s transfer antics. Whereas, with Monk he took a team of decent players and transformed them into a group of really great players. So, with it being Monk’s first year in management, I’ll go for him.”
And lastly, what is your prediction for the match?
“With recent displays I do fear the worst, but in usual pre-match tradition, I’ve got to be optimistic and perhaps we can grab a draw at St. Mary’s. I’ll go for 1-1.”
