Saints unwilling to deal with Spurs

The Telegraph reported earlier that Southampton are unwilling to do transfer business with Tottenham in the future.

Southampton are certain that they are not going to let Victor Wanyama leave to go to Spurs for any price in the next transfer window and are reluctant to listen to any offers that Spurs may have for their players in the future.

The reasoning behind this is thought to be because Southampton see Tottenham as a direct rival of their’s and do not want to lose any players to them that would improve the quality of a rival that could go on to hurt Southampton in the league.

Before being interested in Wanyama this year, Spurs tried to sign Morgan Schneiderlin from Southampton last year. Schneiderlin did not join Spurs and now plays for Manchester United having joined them earlier this summer. Southampton have grown angry at Spurs in both transfer chases. In both the Wanyama and Schneiderlin pursuits, the interest from Spurs upset the players and caused them to want to leave and hand in transfer requests. However, Spurs never followed that up with what Saints saw as a ‘acceptable bid’.

This could have been a tactic by Spurs to upset the player and as the player pushes for a move, the selling club lowers the price. It is a tactic they seem to be using a lot, however, not to great effect. Not only have they done it with Wanyama and Schneiderlin, Spurs have done it with Berahino at West Brom.

Tottenham’s interest in the West Brom forward caused him to hand in a transfer request and become unsettled. However, Spurs didn’t make an acceptable bid and Berahino is still at West Brom.

Time will tell if Spurs do come back in for Wanyama, however, going by what these reports say, Southampton won’t entertain any interest from them.
