Legendary Arsenal defender Martin Keown has suggested that Premier League champions Liverpool should be looking at Southampton star Jannik Vestergaard to cure their defensive issues.
The three-time Premier League winner told talkSPORT (11:41am, January 8, 2021) that the 1.99m-tall Danish powerhouse would be the ideal solution as Jurgen Klopp’s side struggle to cope with a host of injuries at the back.
Whilst praising the form of the 28-year-old, Keown said he ‘hadn’t seen a better central defender’ this season before going onto link the giant Dane with a potential Merseyside switch.
He told talkSPORT: ”I’m not trying to cause a problem for Southampton, and I thought that maybe that would be a player that Jurgen Klopp would go after. He has been brilliant this season. He is injured at the moment.”
Vestergaard missed the 1-0 victory over the Merseysiders on Monday with a knee problem but has been in inspired form so far this season, averaging a Sofascore match rating of 7.28, including a lofty 8.0 against Brighton recently.
Unsurprisingly given his height, the Danish international has had plenty of success in the air, average 4.2 successful headed clearances per game.

Mentioning the words Liverpool, Southampton and transfer in the same sentence is always likely to send a shiver across the spines of Saints supporters.
That ground is well-trodden as for a period the Saints were essentially a feeder side to Anfield and the sale of Virgil van Dijk three years ago has already helped solve a previous defensive crisis at Liverpool.
However, with the Saints on a far sounder footing this season and pushing for European football, it seems unlikely that there would be any need to sell the best assets, especially mid-season.
