Sassuolo are pushing to complete a deal for Spezia Calcio striker David Okereke, who has been heavily linked with Southampton in recent times.
The Saints had been touted with a strong desire to sign the promising Nigerian forward, who scored 10 goals in Serie B last season, contributing with a further 12 assists.
Reports in Italy suggested that Southampton had opened the bidding for Okereke with a €10 million offer, accompanied by an additional €5 million in bonuses.
However, as per claims from Di Marzio, Sassuolo appear to be pushing the hardest to land the attacker this summer.
Roberto De Zerbi wants to recruit quality to add to his options in the final third ahead of next season, and Okereke’s displays in the second tier of Italian football have seemingly caught the eye.
The 21-year-old’s agent Patrick Bastianelli recently discussed the future of his client, confirming that he would be leaving Spezia for a move to a major European league this summer.
By the end of June, Okereke will be sold.
It [his next destination] will be Serie A or a maximum foreign league because this will guarantee the boy an immediate convocation in his national team.
Other players in Italy who Southampton should consider pursuing
Vieira, formerly of Leeds United, has a bright future. The England U21 international is currently at Sampdoria, but the prospect of Premier League football could be appealing.
Ounas is a bright young winger who has not had many opportunities at Napoli. He could be an intelligent signing.
Izzo had a tremendous season in central defence at Torino last term. He would solidify Southampton’s leaky back-line.
Karamoh had a loan spell at Bordeaux last season but is on the books of Inter. The young Frenchman could still have a hugely exciting future if he is willing to knuckle down.
Meite is another player who was exceptional for Torino. He screened the midfield impressively and is arguably highly underrated.
