Southampton sent a scout out on Friday night to watch Waasland-Beveren’s 4-2 victory over Excel Mouscron in the Pro League play-offs, according to Belgian news outlet DH.
The visiting side came away with a comprehensive win as representatives from clubs across Europe watched on.
It is claimed that the Saints sent a scout out to Belgium and were accompanied by talent-spotters from Premier League rivals Arsenal and Bundesliga surprise package Eintracht Frankfurt.
Southampton are believed to have been keeping an eye on talent in the Pro League of late, with Standard Liege winger Moussa Djenepo reportedly a target for the club this summer.
DH do not specify which player the Saints were particularly observing in their viewing of Waasland’s victory but note that Nana Ampomah enjoyed an impressive performance, capped by his goal in the 93rd minute to seal his side the win.
Ralph Hasenhuttl will hope to see his squad significantly strengthened in his first full transfer window, and whether or not a player will be pursued from either Waasland or Mouscron remains to be seen.
Pro League players who Southampton should consider signing
Trossard is arguably the best player in Belgium. The winger has been excellent for Genk and would provide Southampton with creativity on the flanks.
Wesley has long been touted as a target for Premier League clubs. The young Brazilian forward could be ready for the next step.
Djenepo has been linked with Saints recently and could add pace, dribbling ability and trickery to the team on the left wing.
Groeneveld has struggled with injuries this season, but the Club Brugge winger remains a talented player. He’d be a risky signing, but his potential is clear.
Lestienne, another Standard Liege winger, could provide Hasenhuttl with the intelligence and technical qualities that he demands of his attacking players.
The wing-back is a fantastic prospect. He’s been excellent for Genk and would be an astute signing.
