A number of Southampton fans have reacted to the latest defiant message from Ralph Hasenhuttl that their forthcoming meeting with basement club Sheffield United is not a “must-win” for the Saints.

Southampton are in an awful period of form at the moment and they have managed to take just one point from the last 27 available to them in the Premier League.

The 1-0 defeat at Everton on Monday night means that Hasenhuttl’s side remains just seven points clear of the relegation zone, having dropped alarmingly down the table after eight losses in nine league matches.

Undoubtedly, the pressure is on the Austrian now to turn things around, as it would be on any manager whose side are in such poor form. Southampton remains hit with injury issues with Oriol Romeu now out for the campaign.

However, there should still be enough talent available to be picking up better results than they have been doing.

Speaking to Hampshire Live, Hasenhuttl aimed to take pressure away from his players heading into their crucial game at Sheffield United on Saturday. The Austrian insisted that if the Saints can not take all three points then there will be other games to come to put things right and ensure they do not go down.

He said: “If we don’t win, we are not relegated. We must pay attention to the situation we are in, with 30 points we will be relegated, but we have not only Sheffield to win.”

Southampton fans react over Hasenhuttl’s message ahead of Sheffield United clash

Many Southampton fans were surprised with these comments and believe that the game simply is one that they have to take three points from to halt their slide. However, there were some who saw it as him just trying to relieve pressure from himself and the players.
