Southampton endured a nightmare evening at Old Trafford with the Saints falling to another 9-0 battering, in a game full of controversial refereeing decisions but also littered with errors from Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side.
The Saints fell to a fourth successive Premier League defeat for the first time since April 2018 in embarrassing fashion as they were again on the end of a 9-0 defeat in what was a flashback to the infamous Leicester City debacle from October 2019.
Any chance they had of taking anything off title-chasing Manchester United was extinguished in the opening two minutes when Alex Jankewitz was dismissed for a ludicrous and horrendous challenge on Scott McTominay.
From that point on, it was always going to be a very difficult task for the Saints, who headed into the contest already depleted in terms of personnel. The last thing they needed was to play almost the entire match a man light and that really did take its toll.
However, there were still some awful pieces of defending for the goals and to lose by nine goals is inexcusable, even though there were some controversial decisions against them.
It is going to be a major task for Hasenhuttl to pick his players up after this performance, but the Austrian has done that before and turned things around in similar circumstances. Both Kyle Walker-Peters and Jannik Vestergaard are nearing returns to fitness, and they cannot come back soon enough. This was a horrific evening for the club, who will have plenty to ponder.
Here is how we rated the performances of the Southampton players in what was a torrid evening for them and one to forget…
