Saints fans hammer Moussa Djenepo following Old Trafford battering

A number of Southampton fans were raging over the performance of Moussa Djenepo during the Saints’ 9-0 battering at Old Trafford against Manchester United on Tuesday night.

The Saints headed into the game hoping to avoid a fourth successive Premier League defeat and get their campaign back on track. However, that went out of the window inside the opening two minutes of the game when Alex Jankewitz was rightly shown a straight red card for a reckless challenge on Scott McTominay.

Southampton should still not have fallen to such a heavy defeat and there were some awful moments of defending, although some decisions went against them with Che Adams’ goal ruled out harshly and Jan Bednarek receiving a contentious red card.

It seems harsh to pinpoint just one player from what was an awful night for the Saints, but Djenepo endured a particularly torrid game at Old Trafford. The winger was not disciplined enough defensively and failed to provide adequate protection in front of the inexperienced Kayne Ramsay, who at times was having to defend two against one down the right-hand side.

Djenepo lost possession 15 times throughout the game, and although he made three tackles and three clearances (Sofascore), that was not enough considering how much the Saints were pushed onto the back foot. The moments when he switched off ultimately nullified some of the other good work he did.

Many Southampton fans were furious over Djenepo’s lack of protection for Ramsay down the right-hand side, and some feel that he has never really offered enough since he arrived at St Mary’s.
