To say that Danny Ings’ second-minute winner for Southampton against reigning champions Liverpool last night was dazzling is an understatement.
The ex-Reds striker came back to haunt his former club as his early dink evaded Liverpool goalkeeper Allison to chip into the far post following an intelligent set-piece routine spearheaded by captain James Ward-Prowse.
The result represented an emotional upset for Saints boss Ralph Hassenhuttl, who was pictured crying tears of joy while on his knees as he secured his first points against Jurgen Klopp’s side.
However, Ings was also the subject of wide-ranging praise from across the footballing world for his superbly accurate chip which ultimately proved to be decisive.
One video of Ings’ goal gained particular traction on Twitter. In a sardonic jab at their rivals, a Manchester United supporter’s account dubbed over Ings’ goal with Celine Dion’s ‘My Heart Will Go On’ from the film Titanic in the latest instalment of this popular meme format.
Posted by @UtdCode, the video was captioned ‘Danny Ings’s (sic) goal vs Liverpool is even better with titanic music’ – and judging by the responses in the comments, many fans eager to see the Saints cause an upset were beyond delighted with the user’s video of the goal.
Football fans of many persuasions took to Twitter to lap up the moment…
