A number of Southampton fans have been hailing the recent performances of Alex McCarthy following the Saints’ goalless draw against West Ham at St Mary’s on Tuesday night.
The Saints were aiming to get back to winning ways after their defeat against Manchester City was followed up by a goalless draw at Fulham on Saturday. However, their preparations were not helped by Ralph Hasenhuttl being forced to miss the game due to having to self-isolate. Southampton though managed to at least ensure they ended the year by picking up a point.
One player who was instrumental to the Saints picking up a point against West Ham was McCarthy, who was in outstanding form to ensure that he kept his seventh clean sheet of the season so far. He managed to make three crucial saves (Sofascore), one of which was a vital intervention late on to deny Said Benrahma from close range after the Saints failed to clear the ball.
The 31-year-old’s performance was typical of his form so far this season which has fully justified him establishing himself firmly as the Saints’ number one keeper. McCarthy’s season average for saves has been 2.9 per game and he is conceding just 1.2 goals per game (Sofascore). He is likely to prove crucial to helping Southampton finish in and around the top seven.

Many Southampton fans were heaping praise on McCarthy following the keeper’s late save to deny West Ham the winning goal, while there were others who were also praising him for his overall impact throughout the campaign so far.

Incredible save from Mccarthy at the end. How well has he played this year. Really concerning the lack of chances #saintsfc are creating, seems like opposition teams have figured us out a bit.

On a positive note, KWP and Theo link up well and McCarthy was excellent. #SaintsFC

Point gained as we were slow, sluggish and poor again. Mccarthy with match saving save. 3 half games now without goal its all gone very flat 😞. #saintsfc

That will be one of the saves of the season. Might not look spectacular but that is world class from McCarthy. #saintsfc
