Southampton set to focus on signing new centre-back

Southampton will make signing a new central defender their priority after they have wrapped up a deal for Che Adams, according to a report from The Telegraph

Ralph Hasenhuttl has overseen the arrival of one arrival at St Mary’s Stadium so far following Moussa Djenepo’s £14 million move from Standard Liege.

However, the second man through the door appears to be edging ever closer to securing a transfer to Southampton, with the club nearing the completion of a £15 million deal for Birmingham City striker Adams.

The 22-year-old has been a target for Hasenhuttl since the January transfer window, and after extensive negotiations with the Championship club, it seems the Saints have got their man.

There is still work to be done for Southampton this summer, though, and The Telegraph’s report has detailed their next area of focus.

Much was made of the Saints’ shortcomings in the defensive third last season, which prompted Hasenhuttl to favour a system that involved three centre-backs, and the club are now turning their focus to strengthening their options.

Southampton signed Jannik Vestergaard for £18 million last summer, and Wesley Hoedt for £15 million in 2017, but it seems they are now preparing to invest in another central defender as they look to avoid a repeat of last season’s struggles at the foot-end of the Premier League table.
