AZ Alkmaar have been in contact over a deal to sign Jordy Clasie from Southampton, their club director has confirmed.
Max Huiberts, who is set to oversee the Dutch outfit’s transfer dealings this summer, discussed their possible interest in signing the midfielder from the Saints.
Last week, reports stated that AZ had entered talks with Southampton over a deal for Clasie, whose contract at the club expires in the summer of 2020.
These claims have now been verified by Huiberts, who has revealed that contact has already been initiated between incoming manager Arne Slot and the player himself.
Speaking to Dutch news outlet NH Nieuws, the director said:
Sometimes there is a chance to get this kind of boy. The coach has been in contact with him. Jordy Clasie has a one-year contract with Southampton. We have to wait and see how this develops.
Clasie spent last season on loan at boyhood club Feyenoord but does not appear to be set for a stay in Rotterdam.
However, the midfielder may be poised to return to his homeland of the Netherlands once again, with AZ exploring a possible transfer.
Four other players Southampton must sell this summer
Forster should be sold instead of Alex McCarthy, if possible. He is no longer a Premier League-quality goalkeeper.
Hoedt is a disaster waiting to happen. It goes without saying that he must be shown the door.
Much like Hoedt, Stephens is rather a liability. He is not up to the level required at Southampton.
Austin does not suit Ralph Hasenhuttl’s style. He should be one of the players who leave this summer.
