Southampton are said to be looking at Inter Milan defender Zinho Vanheusden, but face competition from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
That is according to a report in Het Belang van Limburg, cited on HITC, which says the Saints would be interested in taking the promising centre back to St. Mary’s this summer.
The Belgian spent last season on loan at Standard Liege, but is set to return to parent club Inter Milan in the coming weeks.
The 19-year-old has not yet featured for the Italian giants, and looks likely to be leaving on a permanent basis ahead of the 2019/20 campaign with Inter wanting a fee of £18 million.
Ralph Hasenhuttl is said to have placed a new centre back at the top of his transfer wishlist as he looks to put his stamp on the squad.
Wesley Hoedt and Jack Stephens have also been rumoured to be leaving, so reinforcements will be needed.
Southampton have had recent dialogue with the three-time European champions after agreeing to loan Cedric Soares to the Serie A side, which they will hope will give them a slight advantage in the race for his signature.
Four more defenders Southampton could target
Cahill will be available on a free transfer this summer with his Chelsea contract about to expire. He would bring plenty of experience and a winning mentality to Southampton.
Stark currently plays for Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin and is a player many rate highly. The 24-year-old German international would be a great signing and would sure up the Saints’ back line.
RB Leipzig captain Orban is a player Hasenhuttl has worked with previously, so could be keen on a reunion. The Hungarian is contracted until 2022 so could cost a sizeable fee, but would be a statement signing.
Jullien has performed well for Toulouse recently and has been strongly linked with a move to Celtic. The 6ft 5in defender would add plenty of size and power to the Southampton defence.
