Southampton target Jean-Philippe Mateta is poised to sign a new contract with Bundesliga side Mainz.

According to Le10 Sport, via journalist Ronan Murphy, Mateta will sign a new deal, which will come as a blow to the interested parties.

Newcastle, Watford and Southampton were among a host of clubs said to have been keen on a move to bring the striker over to England this summer, but he now looks set to stay with Mainz for another season, at least.

The young forward enjoyed an impressive season in Germany with Mainz, scoring 14 times in the Bundesliga, attracting interest from Southampton and a number of other Premier League sides.

Mateta joined Mainz from Lyon last summer, after failing to score in two senior appearances for the French giants during a two-year spell.
