Southampton were denied a vital win in their fight for survival after a 90th-minute equaliser from Watford in a 1-1 draw at Vicarage Road.
This all came after Shane Long broke the record for the fastest ever Premier League goal which had been previously set by Ledley King in 2000 after just 9.82 seconds.
Long surpassed that by finding the back of the net after only 7.69 seconds as he wrote his name in the record books.
The Irish international closed down Craig Cathcart straight from kick-off to win possession and loop the ball over Ben Foster.
The next 89 minutes were very tight with decent chances for both sides to change the scoreline.
Watford eventually managed to break the Saints defence late on after a scramble in the box led to Andre Gray poking the ball past Angus Gunn at his near post.
This point moves Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side six points clear of the relegation zone with just three games to play.
Here’s how we rated the Southampton players:
Angus Gunn: 6
Made a couple of vital saves but would have been disappointed with the late equaliser.
James Ward-Prowse: 7
Much better today in this right wing-back role having put a couple of dangerous balls in as well.
Jan Bednarek: 5
Not Bednarek’s best outing as he was unusually rash in his challenges.
Maya Yoshida: 7
The best of the back three today due to some impressive last ditch defending.
Jack Stephens: 4
Another struggle for Stephens who was given a hard time by Deulofeu.
Ryan Bertrand: 6
Got forward well but perhaps didn’t give enough protection to Stephens.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg: 6
The skipper had some nice link-up play in the first half but wasn’t as effective in the second.
Oriol Romeu: 5
A wayward pass caused some bother for the Saints and he was a red card waiting to happen before being substituted.
Stuart Armstrong: 5
Applied some pressure to the Watford defence but was largely anonymous throughout.
Nathan Redmond: 7
Redmond was dangerous again in the final third but was guilty of missing a couple of great chances.
Shane Long: 8
His record-breaking goal summed up his performance as his closing down was rewarded and he never gave up.
Josh Sims (sub): 5
Not too much to note in his 25 minute cameo due to the Saints sitting deeper than they would have liked.
Mario Lemina (sub): N/A
Failed to make an impact in his 15 minutes.
Yan Valery (sub): N/A
His return was welcome but wasn’t on long enough to warrant a rating.
