John Stones, Fabian Delph, Jordan Henderson and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have all dropped out of the squad for the upcoming European Championship qualifiers.
Ward-Prowse is rewarded for his impressive form in the Premier League for Southampton this season, including back-to-back free-kick goals against Manchester United and Tottenham.
It comes little over two years after his previous, and only, call-up to the senior squad. He made his debut against Germany in March 2017, alongside Southampton teammate Nathan Redmond.
The 24-year-old has made over 200 appearances for Southampton since breaking through into the first-team in the 2012/13 season, scoring 18 goals in that time – six of which have come this term.
Ward-Prowse has bags of England experience at under-21 level, with 31 caps to his name.
