Southampton welcomed Cardiff City to St Mary’s Stadium, hoping to take all three points and pull away from the relegation zone.
But Neil Warnock’s men had other plans. Sol Bamba gave the Welsh side the lead before Jack Stephens equalised in injury time. Just as fans thought the spoils would be shared, Keneth Zohore scored a winner with 94 minutes on the clock to send Cardiff fans into hysteria.
The game was preceded by a minutes silence, a mark of respect for the tragic loss of Emiliano Sala this past week.
The result puts Southampton level on points with Burnley, and deep in the mire of a relegation battle and could end the weekend in the drop zone.
Ralph Hassenhuttl opted for Shane Long upfront to replace the injured Danny Ings, whilst Ryan Bertrand made his long-awaited return to the fold, coming in in place of Matt Targett at left wing back.
Here is how we rated the players;
Alex McCarthy - 5
Let down by his defence on both occasions.
Yan Valery - 5
Several opportunities to score, but didn’t. One of the better players today.
Jan Bednarek - 5
One of his poorest performances in recent weeks.
Jack Stephens - 5
Got the goal but his defending is still not up to scratch.
Jannik Vestergaard - 5
Struggled today, must do better at the back.
Ryan Bertrand - 5
Got forward okay at times, will ease his way back into action over the weeks.
Oriol Romeu - 5
Looked off the pace slightly. Booked.
James Ward-Prowse - 4
Could not get in the game at all. Booked.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg - 5
Had a lot of the ball and completed a lot of passes, but seems to take slightly too long on the ball.
Nathan Redmond - 6
Yet again proving to be the biggest threat in the side. But needs to be more clinical
Shane Long - 3
Ineffective. Not good enough at all considering Southampton are low on strikers due to injury.
Charlie Austin - 4
Supposed ‘fox in the box’ wasted key chance to score .
Mohamed Elyounoussi - 4
Had very little impact at all.
Sam Gallagher - N/A
Little time to seriously impact the game.
