Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand is back in training but will not be fit to face Leicester City this weekend.
The England international has been sidelined after undergoing a back operation and has not featured since captaining the Saints in their 1-1 draw against Watford in November.
After a spell out of action, however, the 28-year-old is back on the training pitch and has resumed light work with his teammates.
Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl was quizzed on the condition of Bertrand as he looked ahead to his side’s upcoming trip to Leicester City.
As quoted by the club’s official website, he delivered an update on the left-back’s fitness.
Although the defender appears to be making good progress in his recovery, the Saints manager was certain in his view that the visit to the King Power Stadium would come too soon for the player. He said:
Not for the Leicester game, it’s far too early. He is training fit, but not match fit. It will take time.
Matt Targett has been operating on the left-hand side of a back five in recent weeks, with Cedric Soares deputising in the position for Southampton’s last Premier League match against Chelsea.
