The Austrian tactician left RB Leipzig at the end of last season by mutual consent, with the Bundesliga club replacing him with their existing sporting director Ralf Rangnick.
The Saints have wasted no time in their pursuit of a new boss following their decision to sack Mark Hughes and his backroom staff on Monday morning.

This dismissal came following the Welshman’s underwhelming start to the Premier League season with Saints, as the club continue to sit in the relegation zone after 14 games.
Hasenhuttl is regarded as one of the most coveted available managers in European football following his exploits with FC Ingolstadt and, most recently, Leipzig.
It’s reported that the 51-year-old staged talks with the Southampton hierarchy on Monday, with these negotiations described as ‘positive’.
