Oriol Romeu played for Southampton’s under-23 side this week after Mark Hughes decided not to use him against Leicester in the League Cup.
Southampton lost on penalties to Leicester after drawing 0-0 in normal time, but Romeu was not even on the bench – despite being fully fit.
Instead, he played for Southampton’s youth side as they beat Notts County 7-0 on Wednesday.

The Spaniard has made over 100 appearances for the club since his move to the club from Chelsea in 2015.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Mario Lemina have been Southampton’s first-choice midfield pairing this season, with Romeu finding his chances limited in the Premier League.
Romeu has been a consistent performer over the years for Southampton, but Mark Hughes has been reluctant to use him at times.
The Saints currently sit in the relegation zone and are the only team to only win one game so far this season in the league.
