Southampton have been linked with a move for Paulo Sousa as Mark Hughes’ position as the club’s manager continues to come under scrutiny.
According to a report from Italian news outlet Calciomercato.it, the Saints have already initiated contact with the Portuguese boss’ entourage as they make contingency plans ahead of a potential change in management.
Hughes’ future at St Mary’s is looking doubtful, with the club currently sat in 18th place on the Premier League table after winning just one game in the top-flight so far this season.
Sousa is currently out of work but was last in charge of Chinese Super League side Tianjin Quanjian.
The 48-year-old, who was a Portugal international during his playing days, has experience of managing in English football following ventures with QPR and Swansea City respectively in the past.
Leicester City, too, are cited as potential suitors for Sousa by Calciomercato.it, with Claude Puel’s future at the King Power Stadium currently uncertain.
