Southampton forward Shane Long nursing an ankle problem
Southampton forward Shane Long is nursing a minor ankle problem, Republic of Ireland manager Martin O’Neill has confirmed.
The experienced striker has been included in his national team’s squad ahead of their upcoming fixture against Denmark in the UEFA Nations League.
Long was forced to sit out of the previous international break due to a toe injury and it seems he has been left frustrated by another minor knock, with the striker now recovering from an ankle problem.
O’Neill, as quoted by the Daily Echo, delivered an update on the condition of the Southampton forward and was optimistic about his chances of featuring against Denmark this weekend.
It’s not that sore, it is just puffed up. It may be a matter of resting it for a day or two. But he thinks that he should be okay.
It’s reported that Long sustained the knock during Southampton’s humbling 3-0 defeat to Chelsea at St Mary’s on Sunday.
Saints boss Mark Hughes will be hoping that Long’s injury is not aggravated before he returns from the international break, with Southampton in desperate need of points at this early stage of the season.
