Southampton have come up short in their pursuit of Danny Welbeck.
The Arsenal striker’s wage demands were reported by Sky Sports to be beyond what the Saints were willing to pay, with a potential move therefore off the table.
Various sources had suggested the south coast club were looking to add a striker before the 5pm transfer deadline, but with less than two hours to go it now seems unlikely Mark Hughes will welcome a new attacker.
The likes of Paco Alcacer and Danny Ings had been linked with Southampton in addition to Welbeck, but Hughes will have to begin the season with his strikers from last season.
Shane Long struggled mightily during the last campaign, and the more reliable goal threat of Charlie Austin found it difficult to stay fit.
With new acquisition Mohamed Elyounoussi ready to take to the wing at St Mary’s, Saints fans will be hoping one of the club’s centre forwards can provide the winger with adequate support.
