The Saints have made the Scotsman their first signing of the summer transfer window as they look to strengthen their squad for next season.
Armstrong joins in a deal believed to be worth in the region of £7 million, with additional bonuses understood to be built into the cost.
The midfielder, who had only one year remaining on his deal at Celtic Park, signs a four-year contract at Southampton and will be hoping to hit the ground running under Mark Hughes.

Armstrong is known to be a midfielder who likes to get forward and support his side in attacking transition, adding to Saints’ options in the middle of the park.
Southampton had been linked with a move for the Scotland international for two years but after reaching an agreement with Celtic, Armstrong has put pen to paper on a deal to sign for Saints.
