Southampton are keen to beat Leicester City in the race for FC Basel winger Mohamed Elyounoussi, according to exclusive claims from the Daily Star.

The Saints have long been linked with a move for the wide player, who has caught the eye of a number of Premier League clubs in the last 18 months at Basel.

Elyounoussi is a top target for Leicester this summer but if the Daily Star are to be believed, Saints want to recruit the player in a deal worth £16 million.

Southampton look set to lose Dusan Tadic to Ajax this summer and are hopeful of receiving around £18m from this sale. Sofiane Boufal could also depart St Mary’s, meaning that fresh attacking blood would be required.

Elyounoussi, who is an established international for Norway, enjoyed a fantastic season in Switzerland. He found the net on 13 occasions in all competitions.

The Daily Star even go as far as claiming that Saints have tabled a contract offer worth £8m across four years, along with performance-based bonuses. This would equate to weekly wages of just under £40,000 for Elyounoussi.
