According to a report from the Daily Mail, Southampton are poised to close a deal to make Mark Hughes their new manager by Wednesday.
Following the sacking of Mauricio Pellegrino on Monday, the Saints board have been forced to explore more experienced alternatives in an attempt to salvage the club’s awful season so far.
It’s believed that Saints have focused their seemingly short-lived search for a new boss on those with experience of the Premier League and Hughes certainly fits in with this criteria.
As per the report from the Daily Mail, the final details between Southampton and Hughes are set to be finalised by Wednesday, with the club eager to have their new man in ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final game against Wigan Athletic. After the cup clash, Hughes will have a prolonged period to assess his squad as a result of the international break.
Hughes is set to introduce Mark Bowen and Eddie Niedzwiecki to the Saints backroom staff given his experience of working alongside them at a number of past clubs.
