Despite a valiant second half display from the hosts, Southampton could not prevent Manchester United from securing a 1-0 victory on Saturday afternoon.
Saints headed into the match off the back of a positive 1-0 win of their own away at Crystal Palace last week, while United looked to build on their comprehensive 4-0 demolition of Everton in their previous Premier League fixture.
Both managers named unchanged teams from the two respective wins, and it was a toughly-contested encounter throughout.
However, it was United who struck the first and only goal of the match. Romelu Lukaku forced an instinctive save from Fraser Forster early on in the contest, but the England international could only parry it back out to the Belgian, who made no mistake from close range.
Saints were effectively camped in United’s half after the interval, and a flurry of chances throughout failed to be taken.
It was a frustrating affair for Mauricio Pellegrino’s men, but one they will take heart from.
