England Test coach Stephen Fleming has arrived in the United Kingdom for a brief two-week familiarisation trip before formally beginning his role ahead of the winter tour.
Assessing White-Ball Squad Resources In Manchester
The 53-year-old will visit county operations and the Loughborough performance centre this week. He is then scheduled to shadow limited-overs coach Brendon McCullum in Manchester. Their meeting follows a busy start to the white-ball series, as Sri Lanka prepare to open their T20I tour in front of a sold-out crowd. The squad has already seen changes, with Aneurin Donald stepping in to make his international debut.
Balancing Multi-Format England Player Workloads
The new split coaching structure presents immediate logistical challenges for England. Six players from the recent Edgbaston Test faced rapid transitions into the white-ball squad. Fleming and McCullum must now determine how to balance backroom staff and protect workloads across formats.
Speaking to CricTracker, McCullum acknowledged the operational demands.
“The coaching structure with Flem coming in, split coaches, means we need more resources now, not less resource. So we’re going to have to work through that for the next little while. Flem and I will catch up in the coming days and we’ll start trying to piece all that together,” McCullum said.
Fleming will return home after this short stint. The ECB has permitted him to cover upcoming international fixtures for Sky New Zealand. He will then join the England squad in December for a three-Test series in South Africa.
