Tonda Eckert criticises new touchline timer protocols after Southampton win

Southampton manager Tonda Eckert has questioned new touchline protocols after conflicting return timers sparked sideline confusion during Saturday’s 4-1 victory over Bristol City.

The hosts sealed all three points at St Mary’s through goals from Cyle Larin, Kuryu Matsuki, and Finn Azaz. Eckert adjusted his approach following a demanding midweek clash with Swansea City, executing a half-time tactical pivot to regain control. This adjustment proved decisive, as the hosts had carefully prepared to neutralise the visitors’ dangerous transition threat.

Conflicting Timers Spark Sideline Frustration

The disruption occurred when Larin had to leave the pitch for 60 seconds following a foul. A concurrent Bristol City substitution triggered a separate countdown for an opposing player. These overlapping delays created visible tension on the touchline with visiting manager Michael Skubala.

Eckert told the Daily Echo that the summer regulation changes caused unnecessary issues. “I understand the intent to do the best for the game, but I think today is an example where it clearly hasn’t done that,” Eckert said.

Flynn Downes Expected To Recover Swiftly

Midfielder Flynn Downes was withdrawn at the interval after sustaining an early knock. Eckert confirmed to hayters.com that the issue is minor. “On some days you need to win football games in a different manner than you prepared for. But I’m very confident he’ll be ready for Wrexham,” Eckert said.

Southampton travel to face Wrexham in the Championship next Saturday.
