Southampton FC Women were forced to settle for a goalless draw against Ipswich Town at Silverlake Stadium after defender Amy Goddard had a first-half goal disallowed.
The hosts dominated the opening period but failed to capitalise on their early territorial control. In the 28th minute, Goddard pounced on a fumble by visiting goalkeeper Lysianne Proulx. The defender put the ball into the net, only for the referee to rule she used excessive force in the challenge. This controversial setback defined a frustrating afternoon as the squad marked their return to Silverlake Stadium.
Second Half Lacks Consistent Rhythm
The momentum faded entirely after the interval as the match descended into a stop-start affair with very little rhythm. Both teams were restricted to half-chances amid physical midfield battles, and neither side looked capable of finding a decisive breakthrough. Tactical substitutions proved insufficient to break down a resolute away defence that had spent the first half chasing shadows.
Ipswich manager David Wright had anticipated the intense early pressure before the fixture. Speaking to twtd.co.uk, he warned that the home side would “attack really aggressively.” His team successfully absorbed that initial intensity to secure a point on the road. The hard-fought draw means the hosts failed to replicate the clinical finishing shown during their statement opening day victory at Durham.
