Southampton manager Tonda Eckert abandoned his initial game plan at half-time to secure a 4-1 Championship victory over Bristol City at St Mary’s on Saturday.
The hosts initially struggled with second balls as they targeted another dominant home display. They also lost captain Flynn Downes to an early injury. Eckert replaced the midfielder with Cameron Bragg at the break to alter their direct approach.
Half-Time Adjustments Spark Victory
Eckert admitted his side lacked their usual composure before the interval. Speaking to the Daily Echo, he detailed the mid-game tactical shift.
“We had a long period where we didn’t have control, but we used half-time for that and then played a very different game to the one we planned,” Eckert said.
The changes created wider open spaces throughout the second half. Cyle Larin scored twice, while Kuryu Matsuki and Finn Azaz also found the net. This clinical finishing mirrored their earlier midweek statement victory over Swansea City.
Flynn Downes Injury Update
Downes sustained a knock in the opening minute before eventually withdrawing at half-time. Eckert remains optimistic about his captain’s availability for the upcoming fixture.
“I think he’ll be fine for the next game, but he got a knock after one minute of the game, and he tried to push through,” Eckert told the Daily Echo.
Southampton next travel to Wales to face Wrexham in the Championship on Saturday.
