Tonda Eckert Shields Southampton Squad From Looming Spygate Verdict

Southampton manager Tonda Eckert has stressed that his impending misconduct verdict must not distract from Saturday’s Championship fixture against Bristol City.

Eckert faces a potential suspension for his involvement in last season’s surveillance missions. The FA ruling approaches, but the 33-year-old is determined to shield his players.

“As much as it’s going on in the background, I never want to make these games about me because they aren’t and they never will be,” he told the Daily Echo.

Unbeaten Home Record Offers Stability

The manager believes focus must stay firmly on the pitch as his squad extend an impressive streak. Southampton remain unbeaten at St Mary’s since January, collecting more points in 2026 than any other Championship side.

This resilient form has repaired the relationship between the club and supporters. Even as tactical choices draw recent scrutiny, the rebuilt trust provides a stable foundation.

“You need to earn the trust and build a connection and the relationship back up, and St. Mary’s just feels completely different than it did a year ago,” he added to the Daily Echo.

Contingency Planning Behind Closed Doors

While Eckert prepares for Bristol City and a subsequent away trip to face Wrexham, group technical director Johannes Spors confirmed executives are evaluating outcomes.

Spors told The Independent that the board is discussing contingency plans, admitting: “There are so many uncertainties of how this could look like.”

Southampton will host Bristol City on Saturday afternoon as they aim to consolidate their commanding early-season momentum.
