Tonda Eckert Delays Caspar Jander Return Until Wrexham Clash

Southampton midfielder Caspar Jander will miss Saturday’s Championship fixture against Bristol City as his recovery from a pre-season hamstring injury continues.

The 23-year-old was forced off during a summer friendly at Eastleigh and has yet to feature this season. Manager Tonda Eckert must manage his central midfield workload without the summer arrival, relying on established options like Flynn Downes and James Ward-Prowse.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, the Saints boss confirmed a revised timeline for the midfielder as his rehabilitation advances.

“For Caspar it will be too early tomorrow,” Eckert told southamptonfc.com. “We’re going to push, so hopefully it will be some minutes against Wrexham. We have to delay it a little bit but I think he’s on his way now.”

Midfield Options Against Bristol City

Jander’s continued absence deprives Eckert of a dynamic central option, forcing the technical staff to carefully rotate their available squad. Following a midweek draw with Swansea City that prompted questions over tactical substitutions, Southampton suffered no fresh injury setbacks.

“Nothing [injury-wise] from the midweek game,” Eckert added via Hayters. Eckert must now lean heavily on his remaining fit midfielders to control possession at St. Mary’s.

Integrating Jander against Wrexham before the upcoming international break remains the primary objective. His eventual return will unlock greater tactical flexibility for Southampton, allowing Eckert to deploy fresh personnel across a demanding Championship schedule.
