Nathan Wood Targets Regular Starting Spot as Tonda Eckert Seeks Clean Sheets

Southampton defender Nathan Wood is targeting a permanent starting role under manager Tonda Eckert following the transfer of Taylor Harwood-Bellis to Aston Villa.

The 24-year-old has started four of the club’s opening six Championship fixtures, forming a promising central partnership with summer arrival Keven Schlotterbeck.

While the club recently celebrated an opening day WSL2 victory, Eckert’s senior side are unbeaten in five league matches but have yet to keep a clean sheet.

Speaking to the Daily Echo, Wood acknowledged the opportunity ahead of Saturday’s fixture against Bristol City at St Mary’s.

“I think it’s a big season for me personally,” he said. “A big season for the club to bounce back.”

Emerging Leadership In Defence

Wood noted that his leadership style differs from Harwood-Bellis, but he is determined to guide the backline.

“Personally, I think I’ve got quite good leadership qualities,” the defender added, insisting he will focus on getting the best out of his teammates.

The former Swansea centre-back has praised Schlotterbeck’s top-flight pedigree since the German joined the squad.

Ahead of James Ward-Prowse’s midfield return, establishing a solid defensive foundation remains crucial.

“He’s a very chilled guy, very experienced, played in a lot of big games, played for big teams.”

Wood believes his new partner is a strong addition to the group.

Securing a first league shutout against Bristol City will be the immediate priority for the pairing as Southampton push to extend their unbeaten home run.
