Southampton defender Davon Gbajumo has signed his first professional contract with the club, securing a two-year deal after overcoming significant early injury setbacks.
The 18-year-old left-back initially joined the academy from Peterborough United in the summer of 2025, having previously been spotted at grassroots level by Chelsea. He managed three promising Under-18 Premier League appearances last season before his debut campaign was abruptly cut short.
Overcoming Academy Injury Setbacks
The teenager provides a long-term development option behind senior left-backs like Ryan Manning. His progression reinforces the club’s defensive pathway, continuing a positive week for the setup following Saints Women’s opening day success.
Director of group talent strategy Andy Goldie told the Daily Echo: “Davon had a challenging start to his time at Southampton but has overcome those injuries.”
Goldie noted the defender’s consistent approach during his rehabilitation and added: “He has remained focused, and we hope he can make progress this season.”
Stepping Up To Under-21s
Gbajumo previously told southamptonfc.com: “I feel like this is the right choice for me, in terms of my development, Southampton is really good at developing their players and getting good exposure.”
The full-back is now working towards building full match fitness as Tonda Eckert prepares Saints for their Saturday clash against Bristol City.
Gbajumo will immediately integrate into the Under-21 setup, looking to establish a consistent starting role and build crucial match minutes over the coming months.
