Southampton winger Oli Newman has signed his first professional contract until at least 2027 despite facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines following a long-term injury.
The 18-year-old Wales youth international sustained the setback at the conclusion of the previous campaign. This decision reflects a wider Staplewood strategy of protecting academy prospects during their recovery phases. It mirrors the recent securing of Davon Gbajumo.
Newman arrived from the Norwich City youth setup in 2024. Saints fought off interest from multiple top-flight rivals to finalise his signature. The attacker made 23 appearances for Andrew Surman’s under-18 side last term. He contributed three assists before his season ended prematurely.
Rehabilitation Focus For Coming Months
Director of group talent strategy Andy Goldie confirmed the teenager will spend the majority of the current campaign undergoing individual rehabilitation.
Quoted by the club’s official website, Goldie said: “Oli’s professional contract year is going to look very different to what we had hoped, after suffering a bad injury at the end of last season.”
In further comments published by the Daily Echo, Goldie added: “He sees this as an opportunity to develop other areas of his game, to prepare him for a return to game time towards the end of the season.”
Newman will now continue his tailored recovery programme at the training ground. The medical department will monitor his progress before he targets competitive academy minutes in the spring.
